Jan. 5, 2015 - Gary DeWayne Gustafson, 71, of Hutchinson, passed away Monday, Jan. 5, 2015, at Harmony River Living Center in Hutchinson.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at Dobratz-Hantge Funeral Chapel in Hutchinson with interment in Leavenworth National Cemetery in Leavenworth, Kan. Military honors provided by Hutchinson Memorial Rifle Squad.
Gary DeWayne Gustafson was born April 2, 1943, in Minneapolis, Hennepin County. He was the son of Johnnie and Doris (Beeskow) Gustafson. Gary was baptized as an infant and was later confirmed in his faith as a youth, at First Baptist Church in Grove City. He received his education in Hopkins, Minnesota and was a graduate of the Hopkins High School Class of 1961.
Gary entered active military service in the United States Army, Oct. 31, 1961, in Minneapolis, and served his country during peace time and the Vietnam War. He retired with an honorable discharge, Jan. 31, 1984, with a rank of staff sergeant.
On March 25, 1965, Gary was united in marriage to Joyce Nygaard at Knapp Lutheran Church (known today as North Crow River Lutheran Church) in Cokato. This marriage was blessed with two children, Johnny and JoAnn. Gary and Joyce resided in Leavenworth, Kan. They shared 41 years of marriage until Joyce passed away June 12, 2006. Gary moved to Hutchinson in 2006.
Gary choose an army career in communications where he worked in active duty for 23 years and 20 years in civil services. He retired in 2006. Gary was a member of Hutchinson American Legion Post 96.
Gary enjoyed fishing, traveling and driving around with his friends. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family grandchildren and friends.
Gary passed away Monday, Jan. 5, 2015, at Harmony River Living Center in Hutchinson, at the age of 71 years.

Gary is survived by his children, Johnny Gustafson of Hutchinson, JoAnn Gustafson and her fiancé, Rob Hammell of Hoquiam, Wash.; grandchildren, Kathleen Gustafson, Deborah Gustafson, Brandon Shoopman and Steven Shoopman; great-grandchildren, Leonidas Glendenning-Gustafson and Madison Glendenning-Gustafson; brother-in-law, Merlin Nygaard and his wife, LuAnn of Hutchinson; sister-in-law, Carolyn Nygaard of Hutchinson; close family friends, Bonnie Hamre of Hutchinson, Laura Keith of Hutchinson; many other relatives and friends.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Johnnie and Doris Gustafson; wife, Joyce Gustafson.
